Below are video examples of the rigorous testing done with Nomex® vs. treated cotton fabrics
How does it work? Nomex® is a revolutionary, inherent heat and flame-resistant fiber that reacts in a crisis. When exposed to extreme heat, Nomex® undergoes a special reaction, changing its properties to capture more energy in the fabric, giving the wearer valuable extra seconds of protection from heat transfer. This heat and flame resistance is built into the Nomex® fiber—it can’t be washed out or worn away.
As for comfort, safety apparel made with Nomex® features the lowest possible weight at the highest level of protection; breathability for reduced heat stress; and the ability to effectively wick away moisture.
Available in a wide range of colors and styles, Nomex® fiber helps safety apparel maintain its size and shape after repeated launderings for
a professional appearance.

There are a lot of companies who sell safety garments made with treated cotton, but there are fundamental differences between FR clothing made with Dupont™ Nomex®, and safety garments made with a fabric that's been coated with specialty chemicals.
Nomex® is a revolutionary, inherent heat-and-flame resistant fiber that reacts in a crisis. When exposed to extreme heat, Nomex® fiber undergoes a special reaction and thickens instantly, creating a protective barrier between the heat source and the skin, dramatically reducing exposure and heat transfer. This powerful barrier remains flexible until it cools down, providing extra seconds
of protection and mobility. This heat and flame resistance incorporated into the molecular structure of the fiber and cannot be washed off, work away or affected by abrasion, or exposure to heat. Nomex® will last the entire life of the garment.
Nomex® fabric is light weight and machine washable. It dries quickly and doesn't shrink. It lasts three times longer than other protective fabrics including 100% cotton, polyester garment blends and coated cotton, and is comfortable enough to wear all day long.
